At least nine people were killed in an earthquake in Peru, and at least 40 others were injured, a representative of Peruvian civil defense said. The magnitude 5.3 quake had occurred in the southern region of Arequipa on Monday night (local time). According to the IGP earthquake control center, the center of the quake was located at a depth of eight kilometers near Chivay, 750 kilometers southeast of Lima.
According to the information, the quake triggered a landslide that destroyed dozens of houses. Other victims may have been buried under the rubble, the official said. The landslide also spilled several streets.
Peru is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a region particularly prone to earthquakes. It is a chain of volcanoes and seismologically active areas that surround the Pacific Ocean. Nearly 600 people died in a severe earthquake in August 2007 in the South American country.
